Frigid temperatures in The City Beautiful may have contributed to four water main breaks in four days, making a total of 10 breaks since Dec. 8, according to Infrastructure Superintendent Pat Kelly.

Aiden Xzavier Soria Garcia is Storm Lake’s first baby of the year. He was born Jan. 2 at 7:45 a.m. at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center weighing in at seven pounds and three ounces. He is 20 inches long.
Proud parents are Ismael and Arisbeth Garcia Soria of Storm Lake.
Aiden was a popular name in 2013, says Katie Schwint. So were Zaiden, Brayden, Jayden and Kayden.

A Fonda teen with serious injuries was transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City after a car accident Friday at 9 p.m. east of Newell, according to the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office.
Michaela Kies, 14, of Fonda, was driving east on 620th Avenue when her car was struck by another vehicle at an uncontrolled gravel intersection at 230th and 620th Avenue.

Storm Lake Police report that 18 arrests have been made in connection with a series of drug-related investigations in Storm Lake that have spanned over nine months.
The investigation involved the alleged manufacturing and sale of methamphetamine, the sale of cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana and the use of heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine and prescription pills.

On Jan. 3 at 2:15 p.m. in the 600 block of Lake Avenue, a vehicle driven by Marilyn Laven of Storm Lake was involved in an accident with another vehicle driven by Daniel Cunningham of Sioux City.
The two vehicles collided causing total damages estimated at $4,500.
Cunningham was cited for failure to stop in a safe and assured distance.

Two men jailed after alleged assault of girl
On Monday at 11 p.m. the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department and the Storm Lake Police Department initiated a joint investigation into a reported assault of a 17-year-old girl.
Police were told that on Dec. 25 she had come to Storm Lake with her boyfriend, Skyler Foley, 19, of Storm Lake.

A man who conspired to distribute methamphetamine was sentenced on Dec. 19, to more than 12 years in federal prison.
Kevin Schimerowski, 46, from Odebolt, received the prison term after an Aug. 28 guilty plea to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine.

Tornado students learn grueling art of animation

The projects undertaken by students in the first ever Storm Lake High School animation class seem simple, but if nothing else, these bouncing balls and falling leaves help one better appreciate the work that goes into a full length animated film, or even a short cartoon.
