Council wary of legislature

Storm Lake City Administration has proposed a 1.5% decrease in the city’s overall property tax levy thanks to shrinking debt-service payments and lower-than-expected employee benefit payments.
The proposed total levy stands at $14.06 per $1,000 of taxable valuation, a 1.5% decrease from last year’s levy of $14.27 per $1,000.

Cops chase abuse suspect
K9 sniffs out Yak in woods
Police were involved in a high-speed chase Thursday night that started with a domestic dispute.
At 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to 1328 N. Erie St. #6 in reference to a domestic assault.

Storm Lake St. Mary’s School will be celebrating the gift of Catholic Schools Week Jan. 28-Feb. 3. Probation and fines for driving while barred
Newell resident Allen Hedberg Wednesday pled guilty to driving while barred in Sac County District Court.
Hedberg’s attorney, Peter Goldsmith, filed Hedberg’s plea in district court following a pretrial conference. Court documents show Hedberg is expected to serve a two-year probation sentence and pay court costs and court-appointed attorney fees.

The nation’s farmers have another record soybean crop to sell, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture reports released today.
The 2017 U.S. soybean crop is pegged at nearly 4.4 billion bushels, down 33 million from the previous forecast, according the USDA Annual Crop Production Report. Soybean farmers nationwide averaged 49.1 bushels per acre, a .4-bushel decrease from November estimates.
