Gerald Liesveld

Gerald John Liesveld (Oct. 15,1923 — Jan. 29, 2018) was born in rural Lancaster County, Neb. near Lincoln, to John Liesveld and Anna (Oldemeyer) Liesveld. He is predeceased by his four siblings: Ruth, Nelson, Jean and Edith; his infant daughter, Lois; and by his wife of over 60 years, Lorene (Vandewege) Liesveld.

Jerry spent his childhood on the family farm and graduated from Hickman High School.  Upon graduation, he farmed with his father for a time and then entered the University of Nebraska where he studied agricultural economics.  Upon graduation, he and Lorene moved first to Omaha prior to settling long-term in Storm Lake in 1954. Jerry spent most of his career in land management and enjoyed his travels throughout western Iowa, southeastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota. He loved the business and people of agriculture, and he worked in farm management up to the age of 90. He was a long time member of Kiwanis and of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he served terms on the session.

Jerry is survived by his three daughters: Jane Liesveld (Deepak Sahasrabudhe) of Rochester, N.Y.; Judy Liesveld of Albuquerque, N.M.; and Jill Liesveld of Coralville.

As the father of daughters, he supported their education and professional careers.  He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Kieran Sahasrabudhe, Peter Sahasrabudhe, Jared Dooley and Joy Liesveld, all of whom adored him. Others who survive are his sister-in-law Eleanor (Stanley) Scheevel; nieces, nephews, friends and supportive neighbors from the Lakeshore Dr./Geneseo St. neighborhood.

After Lorene’s death, Jerry entered the Methodist Manor Community and enjoyed his stay at Otsego Place.  Having developed severe glaucoma and partial blindness at an early age, Jerry was an example of surmounting challenges and making the most of things. Faith, constancy and service were hallmarks of his life and the legacy which he leaves.

The Liesveld family wishes to thank the caregivers at Methodist Manor as well as the UnityPoint Hospice team. There will be no calling hours.

Interment in the Holland Cemetery, Holland, Neb.  Arrangements by Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Homes. Memorials in Gerald’s name may be made to UnityPoint Hospice 112 W. 5th St. PO Box 427, Storm Lake, IA.
