County health costs rise 4.8%

Drugs, ACA spur rise

Health insurance rates for county employees are expected to increase 4.8% thanks to a federal reinsurance tax and expensive prescription drugs.

The Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved the rate increase with Wellmark, the county’s insurance provider. Deputy Auditor Leigh Madsen told The Times that 3.5% of the 4.8% stemmed from a reinsurance tax mandated by the Affordable Care Act.
