Out of the dark drink

Brandon LaFever, Mark Kirkholm and some other volunteers got together Tuesday afternoon to rescue an ice shack that was submerged three-fourths of the way off the shore of Frank Starr Park. The shack is owned by Devlun Whiteing, the mayor of Ida Grove. Even though the ice is 14-18 inches thick, the spate of warm weather last week turned the surface of the lake to slush. Above left: The four-wheeler is anchored in a hole to stabilize it. “The ice for the most part is safe,” said BV Sheriff’s Captain Marty DeMuth. “Personally I would not drive a vehicle on it.”
