Sew powerful

The Storm Lake High School media center was turned into a sewing room Monday for a service project for Martin Luther King Day.

Tornadoes who signed up for the “Sew Powerful” purse program not only helped cut out and sew purses for girls in Africa, they learned a rather astounding fact: that girls from poor areas in Zambia stay home from school during their menstrual periods. Disposable pads are not available to them and other methods often involve embarrassing leaks. This means these girls miss about six weeks of school per year.
