Hawk eyes

This is a Cooper’s Hawk spotted in a Storm Lake back yard. Named after William Cooper who first identified it, this crow-sized hawk is slightly larger than the very similar looking Sharped Shinned Hawk. The Cooper’s Hawk was once called a chicken hawk because of its raids on poultry and a bounty was paid for it. These hawks now prey on small mammals and birds and pursue them like fighter jets through the woods. Photo by Hugh Perry
