Harley Smith, Jr.

Harley Smith, Jr., 77, of Fonda died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 at Fonda Specialty Care.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 25, at United Church of Christ in Fonda. Burial followed in Cedar Cemetery in Fonda. Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda was in charge of the arrangements.

Harley LeRoy Smith, Jr., was born Oct. 16, 1940 in Rockwell City, the son of Harley James Smith, Sr. and Viola (Christiansen) Smith.

Harley grew up in Fonda and graduated from Fonda High School in 1959.

On Dec. 4, 1960, Harley was united in marriage to Catherine Johnson at Elfsborg Lutheran Church in rural Pomeroy. They were blessed with two children, Randy and Traci.

Harley owned and operated a gas and service station in Fonda. He made many memories there over the years.

He was a member of United Church of Christ in Fonda.

Harley also had a special love for model trains. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Catherine Smith of Fonda; son, Randy Smith of Fonda; daughter, Traci (Paul) Porter of Chanute, Kan,; grandchildren: Gregory Smith, Joshua Smith, Kayla Smith (fiancé, Alex Struss), Rebecca Smith, Kevin Porter, Anita Porter; great-grandchildren: Ethan, Axel, Lindsay, Kyle, Jaden and Hunter; niece, Tami Smith; nephew, Darin Smith; Margaret Nomann; extended family and friends.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Larry Smith.
