Joan Smith

Joan L. Smith, 82, of Storm Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Nov. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery fund. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Joan was born on Jan. 17, 1935 in Correctionville to Herman and Helene (Janssen) Feddersen. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1953 and obtained a teacher’s certificate from Wayne State College in 1955.  Joan taught school in Ida Grove a few years before marrying Frank Smith on Feb. 1, 1958 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. Together they were blessed with seven children: Tom, Kim, Mary, Mark, Mike, Carol and Matt.  

Joan loved the farm life and enjoyed keeping the books for S & S Farms for numerous years.  She volunteered at SOS Thrift Store and for many funeral dinners. She liked to play cards, especially bridge and she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, plays, etc. She loved her family and treasured her time with them. 

Those left to cherish her memory include children: Tom (Sue) Smith of Storm Lake, Abby, Kelly and Ethan Smith; Kim (John) Clay of Le Mars, Chris, Becca and Kelsey Clay; Mary Smith of Eagan, Minn., Alisha, Quinton and Marissa Natzel; Mark (Ellen) Smith of Storm Lake, Nick (Elizabeth) and Alex Smith; Mike (Becky) Smith of Storm Lake, Nick, Max, Eli and Gracie Smith; Carol (Matt) Fletcher of Huxley, Sam, Ian and Joe Fletcher; Matt (Cami) Smith of Nixa, Mo., Cameron and Cole Smith. She is also survived by her sister Lorraine Johnson of Ida Grove; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Feddersen of Battle Creek and Pauline Feddersen of Anthon; brothers-in-law: Bill Smith and Father Jim Smith of Storm Lake; sisters-in-law: Joyce Smith of Surprise, Ariz., Monica Smith of Storm Lake, Anne Reisch of Chesapeake, Va. and Marilyn (Stan) Hall of Arlington, Va.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Helene Feddersen; parents-in-law, Henry and Marie Smith; her husband, Frank; brothers: Raymond, William, Les (Maxine), Herman, Kenneth, Ross, Robert (Pauline) and Eugene Feddersen; and sisters: Hazel (Buford) Ashby, Viola (Ray) Coon, Helene (Jack Savage and John McDermott), Phyllis (Kenny) Luce; brothers-in-law: Raymond Johnson, Cecil Smith, Ed (Pat) Smith, Joe Smith, Don Reisch; sisters-in-law: Marvel Smith, Luella Smith and Eileen (Bob) Martin.

She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
