Witter calendar focuses on wildlife

FILLERS

BY JOHN CULLEN

You always hear at this time of the year how a certain item would make a great Christmas gift. Of course we know that’s always true about subscriptions to The Storm Lake Times. But here’s another great gift idea: a Witter Gallery 2018 Calendar featuring Buena Vista County wildlife photographs by Hugh Perry.

I just saw a copy of the new calendar and it’s excellent. You’ve seen wildlife photos by Hugh in The Times throughout the year, and this calendar showcases some of his best work.

Hugh, a retired attorney and one of the nicest guys in Storm Lake, volunteered his work for the good of the Gallery. The calendar includes 25 of his best photos — two for each month plus the cover. My favorite is May — my birth month — which features a large picture of a baby fox peering through a fence and a small photo of eastern screech owls.

It’s all in full color with a hole punched for hanging from on a nail on the wall.

All proceeds from the sale of the calendar will benefit Witter Gallery, one of Storm Lake’s under-appreciated assets. Few towns this size — not just in Iowa, but anywhere — can boast of an art gallery, especially one that is as active and offers as many programs as the Witter. It hasn’t received as much support from the city as it deserves. Much like Blanche Dubois, it depends on the kindness of strangers.

The cost is only $20, which is what you’d pay to buy any other calendar at a bookstore in the mall. But with this your money will stay in Storm Lake and help one of the best features of our community.

The calendar is available from 21 local sources. A list is printed in an ad on page 4A.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
