Arlene Grundmeier

Arlene M. Grundmeier, 95, of Storm Lake died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, Aug. 10, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Schaller. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements. 

Arlene Margaret Bernhardt was born May 3, 1922, the daughter of Fred and Isabell (Kallmer) Bernhardt on a farm south of Early. She grew up north of Odebolt, then moved to the Schaller area where she graduated from Schaller High School in 1939. Arlene received a two year teaching degree from Buena Vista College and taught two years in Galva.

On July 10, 1944, Arlene married Art Grundmeier at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller. They had four children: Ann, Barbara, Carol and Dennis. They lived 51 years on the same farm in Eden Township. In 1995, they moved to Emerald Park in Storm Lake, and later to Lake Point Villa in Storm Lake.

Arlene held offices in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller, was a member of the Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America, social clubs, Pinochle Couple Club for 58 years, Legion of Mary, BV Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered for the Sac County Hospice. She especially enjoyed traveling and attending her grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include her daughters: Ann and Carol Grundmeier of Storm Lake; Barbara (Rich) Jorgensen of Schaller; Dennis (Sharmin) Grundmeier of Schaller; grandchildren: Cari (Kyle) Fulcher of Omaha, Neb.; Chris Jorgensen of Kansas City, Mo.; Craig (Hilary) Grundmeier of Holstein; Jon (Val) Grundmeier of Altoona; Allison Grundmeier; Roxanne Grundmeier of Bella Vista, Ark.; great-grandchildren: Ellie and Emily Fulcher, Tristen Stone, Mia Grundmeier, Harper and Joel Grundmeier; brothers: Richard (Margaret) Bernhardt of Litiz, Penn.; LaDon (Norma) Bernhardt of Florissant, Mo.; sisters-in-law,  Ilene Bernhardt of Dike and Gladys (Don) Kestel; many nieces and nephews.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art; infant grandson, Nicholas Jorgensen; brothers: Bob (Lois) Bernhardt, Jim Bernhardt, Wes (Allie) Bernhardt; and in-laws: August and Marie Grundmeier; Erv (Mildred) Grundmeier, Harold Grundmeier, Viola (Curt) Dills and Mel (Agnes) Grundmeier.
