Darlene Dubes

Darlene Dubes, 94, of Overbrook, Kan. formerly of Storm Lake, died Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook.

Funeral mass was held Monday, July 31, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery in Pocahontas. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Darlene Maxine Cartwright was born June 21, 1923 in Garden Grove, the daughter of Ernest Vere and Hazel (Petticord) Cartwright.

She attended school in Davis City, graduating from Davis City High School in 1941. She continued her education at AIB in Des Moines where she took business courses.

On June 7, 1945, Darlene was united in marriage to Harold Mart in Davis City. Together, they were blessed with one son, Craig. Tragically, in 1970, Harold died in a car accident. 

Darlene met Millard Dubes in a couples bridge club. They were married on July 7, 1976 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Ames. She gladly welcomed Millard’s three children: Jane, Brian and Cameron.

Darlene worked at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in the purchasing office and later in the pharmacy. After retiring, she continued to volunteer at the hospital.

While living in Storm Lake, Darlene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was also very involved with the historic Harker House.

Darlene enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge and flower arranging. In 2011, Darlene moved to Overbrook, Kan. to be closer to family. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many.  Darlene will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Jane Braksick of Missouri; Brian (Shelly) Dubes of Tennessee; Cameron Dubes of New York; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Jack) Leftwich of McLouth, Kan.; many nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Harold Mart in 1970; second husband, Millard Dubes in 2006; son, Craig Mart in 2013; brother, Gerald Cartwright; sister, Helen Latta; and son-in-law, Denny Braksick.
