Violet Kuhn

Violet Irene (White) Kuhn, 94, of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Storm Lake, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Prairie Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center in Rapid City.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 17, at 1 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Newell Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Violet was born March 28, 1923, in Dodge County, Minn., to Elmer T and Stacy May (Cardinal) White.  She was the fourth of seven children. The family moved to Newell where she attended school through grade 10.  On Dec. 28, 1939, she married Earl J. Kuhn.

Starting their married life with virtually nothing, their first home was an 8’ x 10’ homemade trailer. With hard work and good ethics, they built a successful and happy life.

To this union a daughter, Donna, and a son, Richard, were born.  Approximately in 1944, Earl began farming and Violet began her role as a farm wife, which continued until 1967, when they moved to Storm Lake. Violet went to work as a turkey inspector at the turkey plant. In 2012, Violet moved to assisted living in Denison to be closer to Richard. Due to some health issues in 2015, she moved into a nursing home in Denison.  After Richard passed away in May, 2015, she moved to a nursing home in Rapid City, S.D. to be near Donna and resided there until her death.

Violet was a gracious hostess welcoming everyone into her home and prepared wonderful meals. She was a hard worker and an immaculate housekeeper, but never minded messes made by grandkids. The grandkids remember her as always being truthful and fair in her gift giving, making sure they all got the same gift or dollar amount.  Her hobby was sewing clothing, making patchwork quilts and putting puzzles together.

Violet is survived by her sister Bonnie; daughter Donna (Dennis) Dressen; grandchildren, Chris (Donna) Dressen and Jay (Stacie) Dressen; great-grandchildren: Nathan, Emmy, Lynsey and Karlee. Also surviving her is extended family: Larry Tastad and his children Teresa (Dan) Gillen, Cynthia Tastad, Nick (Jennifer) Tastad and Douglas (Bee) Tastad; Larry’s great-grandchildren: Lauren, Sarah, Evan, Eric, Claire, Brodrick and Marcos.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; and sisters: Amy, Opal, Vivian and Marjorie; and brother Lyle.
