Getting to know the Dickcissel

A mating Dickcissel couple. 

Storm Lake photographer Hugh Perry visited the Dr. Lois Tiffany Prairie Preserve west of Linn Grove along the North River Road Sunday and discovered the Dickcissel.

It’s a prairie bird named for its call, “dick-dick-cissel.” It is well adapted to Iowa’s agricultural landscape and seems to like this 80-acre tall grass prairie preserve, an anonymous gift from a former student of Dr. Lois Tiffany to The Nature Conservancy of Iowa.
