A runner comes in. “John Doe. Superior runner! One of the best.” Another runner comes in. “Jane Doe. Good job, Jane!”

And another. “Joe Blow. I’ll bet he’s pooped!”

So it goes on the very last Marathon to Marathon Saturday. Runners come in exhausted. Sometimes in clusters, often spaced far apart. Announcer Phil Dukes croaks out each one’s name, his or her hometown and then delivers some kind of folksy remark.
