Donald E. Petersen, 67, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Newell, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 17, at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial followed in Newell Cemetery. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell was in charge of the arrangements.
Donald Eugene Petersen was born June 16, 1949 in Storm Lake, the son of Eugene and LaVada (Miller) Petersen.
Don attended grade school in Sulphur Springs and graduated from Newell Providence in 1967. He continued his education at Buena Vista College where he attended classes. Don completed his education at the Land Surveying Center in Phoenix.
On March 22, 1969, Don was united in marriage to Joan Elaine McClurg in Newell. Together, they were blessed with three sons: Chris, Tim and Nick.
Don worked as a land surveyor for many years, as well as owning and operating both a service station and fuel oil distribution business.
He was active in the community in many different churches, and was a member of the National Rifle Association, BPCR Shooting Club, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Newell Fire Fighters.
In his free time, Don enjoyed singing in the church choir, gardening, hunting, shooting and cooking with his Dutch oven. Most of all, Don loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joan Petersen; sons: Chris (Sherie) Petersen, Tim (Jenni) Petersen, Nick Petersen; grandchildren: Elizabeth (Ryan) Polston, Joshua (Bekah) Petersen, Cole Petersen and Kaitley Petersen. Other family includes brother, Jon (Joy) Petersen; several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and LaVada Petersen; and sister, Leah Franzmeier.
