Second quarter surge helps St. Mary’s beat WB-M

Michael Demers scored 26 points and Storm Lake St. Mary’s outscored West Bend-Mallard 20-9 in the second quarter as the Panthers pulled away to a 65-38 win in a nonconference game on Tuesday at St. Mary’s.

The Panthers, now 12-8, trailed 12-10 after the first quarter, but it was 30-21 St. Mary’s at the half. The home team led 48-30 heading into the fourth period.

“We started out very slow as West Bend-Mallard opened with a 10-2 run 2 minutes into the game,” St. Mary’s coach Nick Landgraf said. “We finally settled down and got into a better rhythm as the game progressed.
