Ralph Reiling

Ralph E. Reiling, 83, of Rembrandt, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake. 

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in  Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids with full military rites by Sioux Rapids American Legion. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Ralph Edward Reiling was born Aug. 3, 1933 in Sioux City, the son of WJ and Emma (Reif) Reiling.

Ralph was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda.

He attended school in Fonda before joining the United States Army on March 4, 1952. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on March 3, 1954. After his release, he transferred to the Army Reserves for eight years.

On Nov. 28, 1953, Ralph was united in marriage to Carolyn Youngdahl in Fort Riley, Kan. Together, they were blessed with six children: Steve, Rod, Carol, Debra, Glenda and Wendy.

Ralph was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids. He also was a member of Sioux Rapids American Legion.

Farming was a passion of Ralph’s. Alongside the fieldwork, Ralph worked as a delivery driver for ZFI and MY Supply.

Ralph’s hobbies included going to the casino, playing cards, watching movies and traveling by car. A highlight of his later years included a trip on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Most of all, Ralph loved spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Rod (Kathy) Reiling of Sioux Rapids; Carol (Darwin) Johnson of Arthur; Debra (Roy) Swenson of Springfield, Neb.; Glenda Reiling of Windsor Heights; Wendy (Tony) Brown of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Judy Reiling of Bennington, Neb.; grandchildren: Michael Reiling of Bennington, Neb.; Jessica Reiling of Pooler, Ga.; Brad (Michelle) Reiling of Sioux City; Todd (Megan) Reiling of Sioux Rapids; Tricia Reiling of Denver, Colo.; Ryan Reiling of Bozeman, Mon.; Jake (Brittany) Reiling of Justin, Texas; Katie Reiling of Kearney, Neb.; Josh Reiling of Omaha, Neb.; Bridget Johnson of La Crosse, Wis.; Gus Swenson of Omaha, Neb.; Leo Swenson of Springfield, Neb.; Cassondra Brown of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; Noah Brown of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; Myles Brown of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; great-grandchildren: Brekken Reiling, Blake Johnson and Beau Johnson; sister, Mickey (Rick) Dixon of Gibsonville, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Marlys Youngdahl of Lakeside and Gwen Reiling of Fonda; extended family and friends.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn Reiling; son, Steve Reiling; sisters, Ethel Faylor and Lucille McKiernan; and brothers, Albert and Harold Reiling.
