Evelyn, daughter of Roy and Opal (Sansen) Schroeder was born May 11, 1923 in Aurelia. While attending Aurelia and Battle Creek schools she enjoyed tap dancing and performing at Holstein and Cherokee High Schools. She also had fun playing the French horn, English horn, tuba and clarinet, and was a member of the Girl Scouts. She graduated from Storm Lake High School and then worked in accounting at Old Baltimore Bayline, in Baltimore, Md.
On July 25th, 1942 she married Loren Everett Cook. She and Loren had a beautiful double wedding at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Loren’s sister, Elaine and husband, Bert Lawrence. They lived in Newell for a short time and then farmed in the Fonda area. Evelyn was a busy farm wife and mother of four children.
She was an active member of the Holy Family Society, Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Fonda. Many good times were had playing bridge, pinochle and 500. She loved to read and went to the library weekly.
Some of Evelyn’s best memories were of Loren and her playing golf and dancing at the Cobblestone. They loved to jitterbug and one time won a dance trophy. They were fun to watch. Her family loved visiting her. She made family times special with awesome meals (especially swiss steak), games and laughter. Christmas was the best. Her smile and laughter made it so. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have great memories with her. She made each one feel extra special.
Retiring from farming, Evelyn and Loren moved to Laurens. They continued to enjoy golf with friends. Much of her time was spent caring for her mother, mother-in-law and Loren. She truly gave of herself. The last three years she lived at Good Samaritan in Davenport, where she made many friends among staff and residents. She had a caring heart and uplifted others with a lot of teasing and laughter.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Family left to cherish her memory include her children: Karen (Tim) Peterson of Sun City West, Ariz.; Lynn (Dennis) Hamilton of Bettendorf; and Lori (Warren) Hudson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; seven grandchildren: Kurt (Jackie) Peterson, Kim (Mark) Evelyn Cook Holt, Allen Cook, Andrea Cook, Robyn (Jeff) Goree, Chad (Sarah) Hamilton, Kendall Hudson; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother; husband, Loren; son, Craig Cook; her sisters, Aurelia Hitchcock and Lois Peck; and great-grandchild, Kaden Bollenbach.
