Richard Utter

Richard E. Utter, 89, of Storm Lake died Dec. 30, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, at 3 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. Following burial, there will be a celebration of life reception at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dick Utter Memorial and contributions will be made to the Buena Vista University Athletic Department and Lake Creek Country Club.

Richard Eugene “Dick” Utter was born Sept. 21, 1927 in Carroll, the son of Eugene and Genevieve (Benedict) Utter.

Dick attended school in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School. He continued his education at Buena Vista University.

On July 13, 1945, Dick joined the United States Navy. Throughout his service, he earned a Victory Medal and the American Theater Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on July 27, 1954.

On Jan. 6, 1973, Dick and Janice Goodwin Sudbay were married and enjoyed 44 years of marriage.

Dick was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake.

Dick was extremely active in the community. He worked in insurance sales and real estate and was the owner of Buena Vista Abstract. Dick served on the Buena Vista Hall of Fame committee, was an original member of Lake Creek Country Club, was a member of the B.V. Club and served as Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club.

Sports were also a big part of Dick’s life. He was a teacher and coach for many years. Dick enjoyed being a referee and later running the time clock at high school and Buena Vista University games. Dick loved golfing and also was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Janice Utter of Storm Lake; daughters: Ronda Utter Hogan (Greg Janicek) of Omaha, Neb.; Rita Utter (Leslie Rau) of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; son, Randy (DeAnn) Utter of Wentzville, Mo.; grandchildren: Justin (Kristen) Hogan, Jenna Hogan, Jared Hogan, Sarah Utter, Todd Utter, Morgan Utter (Colton Aspenleiter); great-grandchildren: Jayden Hogan-Marshall and Brantley Aspenleiter; step-daughters: Patricia Sudbay (Alan Cerniglia) of Flower Mound, Texas; Kathleen Sudbay (Ronald) Koth of Mankato, Minn.; Nancy Sudbay Sahr of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; Tracey Sudbay Hash of Fort Collins, Colo.; step-son, John (Cheri) Sudbay, III of Lewisville, Texas; step-grandchildren: Adam (Amanda) Koth, Joey Sahr, Robbie Sahr, Cody Hash, Taylor Hash, Trevor Hash, Jason Wright Sudbay, John Sudbay, IV; and Julie (Peter) Steinfeld, mother of Sarah and Todd Utter.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Genevieve Utter.
