John “Dale” Peterson, 87, of Aurelia, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Sept. 20, at First United Methodist Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Thomas Petersen and Nelva Petersen officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Aurelia. Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia was in charge of arrangements.
John Dale Peterson was born to Grover and Josie (Dolquist) Peterson at Aurelia on Aug. 11, 1929. At the age of 11, he went to live with Raymond and Freda Nelson, also of Aurelia. He graduated from Aurelia High School in 1947. Dale worked on farms after graduation. He entered the Army in July 1950, and was discharged in 1953. On April 4, 1954 he married Charlene Koch. They lived and farmed south of Aurelia until 1986 when they moved into Aurelia. Dale continued to help his son on the family farm for another 10 years. Later he worked for Redig Funeral Home for several years.
Over the years he loved riding motorcycle, golfing and traveling with friends. He enjoyed fishing and just being with people.
Dale was an active member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion and was in Kiwanis for a few years.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene, of Aurelia; one son, Kurt and his wife Cheryl Peterson of Aurelia; one daughter, Holly and her husband Charles Brown of Burnsville, Minn.; four grandchildren: Justin Peterson of Aurelia; Kolin and wife Emily Peterson of Urbandale; Lindsey Brown and friend Kyle Clark of Apple Valley, Minn.; and Chasson Brown of Burnsville, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Jackson; one brother-in-law, Val Dean and wife Peg Koch of Cherokee; nieces and nephews and friends.
Preceding Dale in death were his two sets of parents; one sister, Jewel and her husband Joe Waters; one granddaughter, Erin Brown; one sister-in-law, Ardyce, and her husband Delmar Wolterman.
