River water tastes like dirt

Des Moines Water Works officials reported Friday its finished water from the tap “tastes like dirt” due to increased organic material in the Raccoon River.

After three weeks of avoiding the Raccoon River due to heightened concentrations of nitrate and cyanobacteria, many central Iowa residents have complained to DMWW that its water has a “dirt flavor” when the utility switched back to draws from the Raccoon.

DMWW Communications Director Laura Sarcone confirmed the rumors, but maintained DMWW’s drinking water is safe for consumption.
