Storm Lake pair drives through cemetery while intoxicated


Police arrested two Storm Lake residents Thursday after one crashed his vehicle into the Storm Lake Cemetery and the other emerged from the vehicle intoxicated.

At 9 p.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to a vehicle in a ditch near the Storm Lake Cemetery on East Lakeshore Drive.

Police allege that Edwin Rios Rios, 23, was intoxicated and had lost control of his vehicle that left the roadway and struck several headstones in the cemetery.

Police arrested Rios, charged him with OWI and booked him into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

Police also encountered a second person at the cemetery who attempted to assist the driver of the vehicle.

The person was identified as Sergio Lopez-Martinez, 22, who was allegedly intoxicated on scene. Police charged and arrested Lopez-Martinez on public intoxication.  Lopez-Martinez was booked into the county jail on a $300 bond.

Damage to the Rios vehicle was $1,000 and damage to the cemetery headstones was $500.

 

SL man arrested on theft charges within family


Police have completed a three-month investigation and arrested a Storm Lake man Monday after police found he stole $600 from a dependent adult by a family member.

On Oct. 26, 2015, police took a report that alleged Harold Brimhall, 56, exploited a dependent adult in his care by stealing money from the victim monthly, between Feb. 2015 and Aug. 2015. 

Police conducted an investigation with the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Social Security Administration and found Brimhall stole $600 from the victim.

Police arrested Brimhall Monday and charged him with dependent adult abuse – exploitation.

Brimhall was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

 

Pair arrested on marijuana charges at Super 8


Police arrested two residents at the Storm Lake Super 8 Motel after the smell of marijuana emerged from their room.

At 5:02 p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to the Super 8 Motel at the intersection of Lake Avenue and West Milwaukee Avenue in reference to the smell of burnt marijuana in the hallway near the guest rooms.

Police allege the odor was coming from room #134.  Police made contact with two occupants and took them into custody after one of the occupants resisted arrest and was subdued by police.

Police secured the guest room and obtained a search warrant for the room.  At 8:19 p.m. Friday, the SLPD executed the search warrant and seized marijuana and other evidence from the room.

Police charged Wilton Cox, 34, of Poncha Springs, Colo. with possession of marijuana and gathering where controlled substances are used. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

The SLPD also charged Terryn Trobaugh, 26, of Mystic with his third offense of possession of marijuana, gathering where controlled substances are used and interference with official acts. He was booked into the county jail on a $2,000 bond.

 

SL student allegedly sells weed to other students


Police arrested a student at Storm Lake High School after finding that the student intended to sell marijuana to fellow students.

At 1:40 p.m. Friday, police dispatched to Storm Lake High School in reference to a drug investigation.

School officials alleged that a student was allegedly observed with marijuana in his possession in the school.

Police made contact with the student and transported him to the police station. Police obtained information that alleges the student attempted to sell marijuana at the school.

Police impounded a vehicle from the high school parking lot as part of the investigation and later searched the vehicle. Police located and seized several bags of marijuana packaged for street sales.

Police charged the boy with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He was processed and transported to the youth detention facility in Cherokee pending a court date.

The case has been forwarded to the Juvenile Court Authority.

 

SLHS student arrested for disorderly conduct


Police arrested a Storm Lake student Friday after the student hurled profanities at a staff member.

At 3:51 p.m. Friday, police took a report at the Storm Lake High School in connection with a student causing a disturbance.

Police were advised that a 17-year-old male of Storm Lake allegedly caused a disturbance at the school by yelling profanities at a staff member.

Police arrested the juvenile and charged him with disorderly conduct. He was processed and released to a parent.

The case has been forwarded to the Juvenile Court Authority.

 

SL man charged with theft from Wal-Mart


Police arrested a Storm Lake man Friday on a warrant alleging he stole $28 in merchandise from the Storm Lake Wal-Mart.

At 1:23 p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to the Storm Lake Wal-Mart Store in reference to a theft.

Store staff advised police that Deandre Godbolt-Banks, 19, allegedly stole $28 in merchandise from the store on Feb. 9.

Police located Godbolt-Banks at 4 p.m. and charged him with fifth-degree theft.  He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $300 bond.

 

SL man arrested on outstanding OWI charge


Police arrested a Storm Lake man Sunday morning on an outstanding OWI charge.

At 9:45 a.m. Sunday, a wanted person surrendered himself at the Storm Lake Police Station.

Police arrested Rafael Garcia-Martinez, 23, who was wanted out of Buena Vista County for an outstanding OWI charge.

Garcia-Martinez was booked into the county jail and held without bond.

 

Outstanding theft charge leads to arrest of SL man


Police arrested a Storm Lake man Sunday on an outstanding theft charge.

At 4:40 p.m. Sunday, an officer observed a wanted person driving a vehicle near the intersection of Lake Ave. and W. 9th St.

Police stopped the vehicle and arrested Ricardo Juarez, 22, who was wanted by the SLPD on a warrant charging him with fifth-degree theft.

The charges stem from an alleged theft at Wal-Mart that occurred Dec. 30, 2015.

Juarez was booked into the county jail on a $300 bond.

 

SL man charged with assault on female victim


Police arrested a Storm Lake man Thursday after he allegedly assaulted a female victim on Walnut Street.

At 10 p.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to the 200 block of E. Milwaukee Ave. in reference to an assault.

Police met with the female victim, who alleged that Abraham Rios, 21, had physically assaulted her in a car next to 724 Walnut St. Rios threatened to kill the victim if she told anyone.

Police arrested and charged Rios with assault and first-degree harassment.  He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

 

Probation violation


Police arrested a Storm Lake woman Thursday after learning that she violated the terms of her probation.

At 12:36 p.m. Thursday, police responded to the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office at 606 Geneseo St. in reference to a wanted person being at the office.

Police arrested Perla Morales, 27, who was wanted out of Buena Vista County on a warrant charging her with violation of probation.

Morales was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

 

Wal-Mart theft


Police arrested a Storm Lake man Monday after he allegedly left without paying for $14 in merchandise from the Storm Lake Wal-Mart.

At 3:29 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to the Storm Lake Wal-Mart Store in reference to a theft.

The reporting party alleged that Isaac Hernandez Lopez, 24, attempted to leave the store without paying for $14 in merchandise.

Police arrested Lopez and charged him with fifth-degree theft. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $300 bond.
