Two shots fired, no one injured

Gunfight erupts at SL motel

Bullets fly across Lakeshore Drive

Storm Lake Police have made several arrests in connection with an early morning disturbance and shooting at a local motel.

On Thursday at 4:16 a.m. police were dispatched to the Sail Inn Motel in reference to a disturbance and a man reportedly armed with a gun going door to door at the motel.

Police made contact with Steve Herrington, 39, of Phoenix, Ariz. Police took Herrington into custody in one of the guest rooms and recovered a loaded .40 caliber handgun and ammunition in the room.

Police encountered a large group of witnesses at the motel. Some of the people declined to cooperate, police say.

An investigation alleges that Herrington and a second motel guest identified as Charles Pulliam, 20, of Pine Ridge, S.D., engaged in an argument, which escalated into a physical confrontation.

Herrington obtained a .40 caliber handgun from his room and displayed it during the confrontation. Pulliam reportedly disarmed Herrington at one point and took possession of the weapon and Herrington then retrieved the firearm back after witnesses separated the two men. Herrington again threatened Pulliam with the handgun and a second physical altercation occurred, which spilled out into the motel parking lot.

According to police, Herrington fired two shots from the handgun while standing on the south side of East Lakeshore Drive in the 1000 block. Shortly thereafter the altercation de-escalated and the two men and other witnesses retreated to their guest rooms as police arrived.

No one was struck by the gunfire.

Police recovered two .40 caliber shell casings on the south side of East Lakeshore Drive across the street from the Sail Inn Motel parking lot, where police believe the weapon was discharged.

Both Herrington and Pulliam were taken into custody without further incident. During the investigation police allege that Pulliam provided them with false information. After police confirmed his identity, it was determined that he was wanted by the US Marshals Service for violation of parole reference larceny out of South Dakota.

Following an investigation police charged Herrington with going armed with intent, assault while participating in a felony, both class D felonies; carrying weapons, two counts of disorderly conduct, reckless use of firearm and public intoxication. He was booked into the county jail on a $5,000 bond.

Pulliam was charged with felon in possession of a firearm, a class D felony; assault while displaying a weapon, two counts of disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and interference with official acts.

While being booked into the county jail, police allege that Pulliam threatened to shoot another jail inmate. He was further charged with harassment. He was booked into the county jail on a $5,000 bond and also held on the US Marshal’s warrant.

Police during the investigation arrested the following at the motel:

Gary Truehart, 22, of Atlantic City, N.J., was charged with supplying alcohol to minors.

He was booked into the county jail on a $1,000 bond.

Nathan Taggert, 19, of Basdrop, Texas, and Sean Martin-Spears, 19, of Gilbert, Ariz., were both charged with possession of alcohol.

They were cited and released pending a court date.
