Driver, passenger without seatbelts thrown from car
Martin Rivera, 23, dies from injuries
A Storm Lake man has died and two people were taken to the hospital after a car accident on a gravel road just southeast of Sioux Rapids on Friday at 10:36 p.m., according to the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office.
Martin-Miguel Angel Rivera, 23, of Storm Lake, was driving north on 160th Avenue when he lost control and entered the ditch north of Hwy. 10.
The vehicle rolled several times and came to rest in a field. Rivera and a backseat passenger identified as Daniel Romero Jr., 20, of Storm Lake, were ejected from the vehicle. Neither of the men were wearing seatbelts.
Sergio Godinez-Jauregui, 21, of Lakeside, was wearing a seatbelt in the front passenger seat and was not ejected.
All three men were transported to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment. Rivera was life-flighted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, where he died Monday.
The Sioux Rapids Ambulance, BVRMC Paramedics, Sioux Rapids Fire Department, BV County Sheriff’s Office and Sioux Rapids Police Department assisted at the scene.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the BV County Sheriff’s Office.
