70,000 gallons of sewage into lake as downpour overwhelms manhole

Due to heavy rains over a two-day period and saturated ground water levels, the City of Storm Lake had a sanitary sewer bypass into Storm Lake during the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 17.

Between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Tuesday, sanitary sewer flows from the city’s wastewater collection system overflowed a manhole near the intersection of Mae Street and East Lakeshore Drive.
