Police get armored personnel carrier

Free military surplus unit

Sheriff also has one

The Storm Lake Police Department has received a military surplus armored vehicle.

The vehicle is a Caiman 6x6 Mine Resistant Armored Personnel Vehicle (MRAP).

The vehicle holds 11 people.

The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office received a similar unit last fall.

For over three years the police department has been on a waiting list to receive an armored vehicle as a support vehicle to law enforcement operations in and around Storm Lake, via the US Government’s Disposition Services Program.

The program provides military surplus equipment to local jurisdictions.

In February the department was told it would be one of five jurisdictions in Iowa receiving one of the vehicles. Other jurisdictions in Iowa that received a vehicle were Mason City, Washington, Story County and Jasper County.

On March 27 the vehicle arrived in Storm Lake by transport truck from Texas.

The listed value of the vehicle is $773,000. The shipping and all incidental equipment needed for the vehicle to make it usable in Storm Lake is paid for from seized criminal assets. No operational budget funds will be used to maintain the vehicle.

“We’re very fortunate to receive a vehicle like this via the surplus program because we would never be able to afford to purchase one,” Public Safety Director Mark Prosser said. “If the vehicle prevents one injury or saves one life it will be worth all of the efforts put into acquiring it.”

The vehicle will support the Storm Lake Police Department’s Tactical Entry Team during its risk deployments, hostage rescue, certain drug related investigations; certain reported in-progress violent incidents and mutual aid responses when needed.

The vehicle will support the Storm Lake Public Safety Lab Response Team during their deployments on high-risk clandestine laboratory investigations.

The vehicle can be used in certain situations for rescue and recovery in and near Storm Lake during extreme weather events.

Over the past 20 years the City of Storm Lake has received and used eleven assorted vehicles spread across the streets, dredge and public safety departments as well as cold weather gear, blankets, helmets and some weapons used by the police department.
