Duluth man, 25, is charged with child sex abuse from 10 years ago

Alta girl was 5 then, he was 15

An arrest was made by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office in a sexual abuse case that occurred in Alta ten years ago involving a 15-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl.

Nathaniel Matthews, 25, of Duluth, Minn., was arrested and charged with six counts of sexual abuse, according to a news release Tuesday.

Matthews was arrested in Duluth and after a waiver of extradition, he was transported back to Iowa.

Buena Vista County Sheriff Doug Simons told The Storm Lake Times there is a three-year statute of limitations on county crimes, “But sex crimes involving minors, those under 18, are extended,” Simons said.

“There are some different statute of limitations on sex crimes involving children,” Simons said. “And this falls in the guidelines, it’s not in violation of that.”

Matthews was 15 when the abuses occurred to the then, five-year-old girl in Alta.

“It was reported to our office and we began looking into it,” Simons said.

The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Duluth Police Department.
