Train vs. car in Alta

According to Sheriff Gary Launderville at approximately 4:22 p.m. on Thursday the Buena Vista County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a train versus car accident on Main Street in Alta. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival it was reported that four occupants of the car had been severely injured. Alta Fire Department proceeded to extricate the victims of the car. All four victims were then transported to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. Two of the victims, ages 2 and 4, were then life flighted to a pediatric trauma center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the car was traveling northbound on Main Street when a Canadian National Train, heading westbound through Alta, collided with it. Initial reports find that both audible and visual warning signals were functioning properly. The investigation is ongoing.

The names of the victims are being withheld at this time and the conditions of the victims are not known at this time.

Assisting at the scene and in the investigation were Alta Fire and Rescue, Iowa State Patrol, Aurelia Police Department, Storm Lake Police Department and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Ambulance.
