AC man’s death ruled as suicide

Found in motel room with half-cup of antifreeze

Storm Lake Police have completed a three-month investigation into the death of Michael Piekarski, 59, of Albert City by ruling the death a suicide.

On Sept. 12, 2013 Storm Lake Police and Buena Vista County Paramedics responded to the Budget Host Motel, room #14 at 1316 Lake Ave. after a report of an unconscious male.

Police and paramedics upon arrival found Piekarski and he was unresponsive.

He was transported by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and was then airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City where he died that afternoon.

Police located a half-full cup of antifreeze in the Budget Host Motel room during their investigation.

An autopsy was conducted on Dec. 17 and police were notified that the results of the autopsy reflected that Piekarski had very high levels of ethylene glycol in his blood, which is a compound of antifreeze.

The autopsy report stated that the most probable cause of death was ethylene glycol poisoning.
