Probation set for manager of nursing home where sex assault occurred
The former administrator of the Pomeroy Care Center was placed on probation for a year and ordered to perform community service for her failure to prevent a sexual abuse under her watch.
Susan Juilfs was ordered by the Iowa Board of Nursing Home Administrators to educate herself on management and then present what she learned to the state conference of nursing home managers.
Juilfs landed before the board because it was alleged that sexual predator William Cubbage, 85, was released by the Iowa Department of Corrections to the Pomeroy nursing home in 2010. On Aug. 21, 2011 Cubbage is alleged to have sexually assaulted Meredith Gottschalk in her bed at the center as she cried out, “No! No! No!”
Willis Hamilton, a Storm Lake attorney, sued the center and the State of Iowa for negligence. His lawsuit awaits trial.
“(Juilfs) knew or should have known that the Male Resident posed a threat to other residents,” the nursing home board noted in its initial charge filed last June. In its final order published Wednesday, Juilfs did not admit the allegations laid before her but consented to the probation. She also was fined $500.
