A claim of elder abuse

Police say woman pulled mom from nursing home, ended her dialysis, fleeced her accounts

Plus, police say she bricked a car

A six-month investigation into a woman withholding life-saving healthcare from her mother while raiding her savings has ended with an arrest.

On April 11 the Storm Lake Police Department and the Iowa Department of Human Services conducted a joint investigation into an alleged dependent adult neglect incident.

An adult female was admitted to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center with complications related to a pre-existing medical condition including liver disease that was believed to be the result of lack of proper treatment.

Police say that Erika Larios, 32, of Storm Lake traveled to a nursing home facility in Rock Island, Ill., in March and removed her mother from the facility and brought her to Storm Lake.

At the time that Larios was accused of removing her mother from the facility, her mother was receiving dialysis almost daily.

Police say that while Larios’ mother was in the Illinois nursing home, Larios accessed her mother’s bank account where Social Security benefits were being deposited, and reportedly withdrew the money and spent it at several locations in Storm Lake for her personal benefit.

Rock Island nursing staff determined the funds were being stolen from their patient’s account and arranged for the funds to be deposited in a separate account in February.

Larios then removed her mother from the Illinois nursing home and moved her to Storm Lake after access to her mother’s account was blocked.

Police say that Larios failed to arrange for the necessary dialysis treatment for her mother once arriving in Storm Lake, which led to the April admission to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.

The Iowa Department of Human Services removed Larios’ mother form her care following her hospital stay and placed her in a care facility in another community.

On Sept. 28 the Storm Lake Police Department charged Larios with dependent adult financial abuse, and dependent adult abuse causing bodily injury.

Larios was serving the warrant in the Buena Vista County Jail while she was being detained on unrelated charges.  She is being held on a $10,000 bond.

Larios was in the Buena Vista County Jail already because of previous charges.

On Saturday at 4:10 p.m. the Storm Lake Police Department was sent to 217 Superior St. following a report of vandalism to a vehicle.

Police met with the reporting party who told police that a dispute over property had occurred on Friday at 11 p.m. with Erika Larios, 32, of Storm Lake.

The victim said that Larios was told to leave the property and Larios picked up a rock and etched a four-foot scrape onto the hood and fender of the victim’s 2006 Ford Mustang.

Damage was estimated at $2,500.

Larios was located at 211 Superior St. and was arrested by police.

Larios was charged with criminal mischief and was booked on a $5,000 bond.
