Plugged toilet leads to theft

Storm Lake Police took a report of an incident that happened at Walmart on Aug. 17.

Police were told that Shannon Cannon, 34, of Waterloo reported to the store employees that she had come to the Storm Lake store and while she was in the restroom, the toilet backed up and damaged her clothing and the receipt she had for merchandise she was about to return to the store.

As a result of the accident, the store gave Cannon new clothing and refunded her for the merchandise she was returning.

Walmart had to contact a plumber for the damaged toilet, resulting in a bill for $1,200.

After an investigation police learned that Cannon was a suspect in a similar type of reported accident in Walmart stores in ten cities across Iowa and Minnesota during the month of August.

The investigation alleges the entire accident was a scam.

The Storm Lake Police Department issued arrest warrants charging Cannon with criminal mischief and theft.

On Sept. 18 Cannon was arrested in Cameron, Mo., and is being held pending extradition back to Iowa.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible.
