Fire in hole consumes rural Sioux Rapids man

Vaughn falls while burning debris

The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office was sent to 1438 Highway 10 at 7:39 p.m. Tuesday because of a man who was on fire.

The man was Lawrence “Larry” Vaughn, 64, of Sioux Rapids.

Vaughn was burning debris in a large burn hole on his farm. While doing so, Vaughn slipped into the hole which was about nine feet deep and could not escape the fire burning in the hole.

Vaughn was announced dead at the scene.

His body was transported by the Buena Vista County Medical Examiner’s Office to Ankeny for an autopsy.

The results of the autopsy are still pending from the state medical examiner’s office.

The investigation continues.
