Purifying the lake

The intricate sand mandala, a three-foot circular design made of colored sand, took visiting Tibetan monks at Buena Vista University five days to make.

But Friday afternoon the “ritual of dissolution” was held. Monks sweep up the thousands of grains of sand with big paint brushes and place them in a symbolic vase.
