Crews chase down gas cloud
Storm Lake firefighers poured 3,000 gallons of water down a manhole
into the city sanitary sewer system at the corner of First and Irving streets
to combat sewer gas that stretched from Lake Avenue to Flindt Drive
along First Street on Wednesday. It appeared that the flush worked in
clearing out the gas.

Strong odors of what smelled like natural gas wafted over Storm Lake this week, prompting emergency personnel to cordon off blocks as they searched for a leak at several locations.
The smell turned out to be natural, all right. It was sewer gas belching up, possibly related to the extremely dry conditions of late.
