Local man chokes woman

On July 14 at 8:33 p.m. the Storm Lake Police Department was sent to 904 Lake Ave. to deal with a man in the front yard who was threatening to kill the owner of the home.

Ashanti Jenkins, 24, of Storm Lake, was outside the home when police arrived and refused to remove his hand from his clothing, apparently hiding something. Jenkins allegedly resisted and fought with officers before being arrested and taken into custody.

Police found him to be in possession of marijuana.

After an investigation police determined that Jenkins was arguing with the owner of the house over the use of illegal drugs. Jenkins was then told to leave and allegedly threatened to kill the victim and burn her car. He then grabbed the victim and choked her up against the wall. She was able to get away and call the police.

Police transported Jenkins to the Buena Vista County Jail and charged him with harassment, domestic assault strangulation, possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespassing and interference with official acts.

He was held without bond.

Jenkins received minor injuries during his fight with police but refused treatment.

Police report three young children were in the home during the assault and a report was made to the Iowa Department of Human Services.
